Dr. Josef Bel-Molokwu was born in Benin City on April 6, 1947, of Onitsha parentage. His father was a pioneer educationist, P.N.C.Molokwu, MBE, and his mother Anna E. Molokwu, nee Osandu, a school teacher. After his early education in Government School, Benin City, he went to the District Council School, Ikeja, Lagos, and St. Patrick’s School, Yaba, from where he left in Standard V in 1958 to go into St. Gregory’s College, Lagos, in 1960, finishing top of his class in 1964. His Higher School Certificate education was at Edo, College, Benin City, in 1965 and 1966, which he finished with distinctions in all his four subjects.His university education was in journalism at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he graduated in 1973 as the best student in his department and the entire Faculty of Arts, winning three academic prizes. In the course of his working career, he embarked on a Ph.D. programme in media management with Somerset University, U.K., and received the doctoral degree in 1987.
