Modular M.Sc. in Film Production

The SMC Modular Master’s Degree in Film Production programme (MFP) has a two-fold aim. On the one hand, the programme aims to erase the gap between the skills and competences acquirable at the University level and the skills and competences in demand by the industry. On the other hand, the programme aims to make available a rarefied qualification that is as professional as it is academic in the context of global best practices.

The programme objective is to erase the gap between the training acquired at the University level and the needs/demands of industry by strategically interfacing the programme with the industry, and thereby producing industry-ready graduates.

The Philosophy of the Programme

The MSc in Film Production (MFP) programme seeks to inculcate in the students the knowledge and the skills required for a successful career in filmmaking and or in academics. Thus the programme will be a combination of both the academic and the professional. It will seek to animate the intersection of theory and practice in the philosophical, entrepreneurial, technological, and aesthetic dimensions of film. The programme will also strive to equip the students with technical competence by providing them with hands-on practical experience and constant exposure to the latest developments in audio-visual content creation and in those academic areas tangential to the field.

Objectives

The main objectives of the master’s programme in Film Production are to:

  • Erase the gap between the training acquired at the University level and the needs/demands of industry by strategically interfacing the programme with the industry—and thereby producing industry-ready graduates
  • Provide the kind of training that is sufficiently and inherently dynamic to respond to the present and future needs of industry—and thereby producing graduates who, both for self and others, can widen the employment opportunities in the motion picture value chain; and
  • To combine the professional with the academic by animating the intersection of theory and practice in the philosophical, the entrepreneurial, the technological and the aesthetic dimensions of the motion picture—and thereby preparing the products for further graduate studies in film and other cognate disciplines.

The Programme Modules

The MFP programme shall be structured around the following modules, comprising different areas of specialisation, theory, and practice of syntax, grammar, aesthetics, and conceptual studies:

  • Module I: Screenwriting
  • Module II: The Business of Film

Each module will run once a year, and students who want an MSc degree must complete all the modules straight in three semesters (full-time) or spread the modules over three years (part-time). The student doing only module(s) will only be awarded a certificate for the module attended.
