Dr. Nwachukwu Egbunike

Senior Lecturer and Heads Pan-Atlantic University Press

Dr. Nwachukwu Egbunike is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University, where he also serves as the Head of Pan-Atlantic University Press. His research explores the intersections of digital media with social movements, youth political participation, freedom of expression, digital authoritarianism and artificial intelligence. A scholar, journalist, and advocate, Dr. Egbunike brings both academic and practical perspectives to his work in media and communication.

He holds a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences (B.MLS) degree in Haematology and Medical Microbiology from the University of Nigeria. He also earned a Master of Communication Arts, a Master of Arts, and a PhD from the University of Ibadan.

Dr. Egbunike began his journalism career as a cub-reporter in the Enugu bureau of National Light and Spokesman newspapers. He later became the Editor-in-Chief of AfricanHadithi and served as Global Voices’ Regional Editor and Community Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa. Since 2005, he has contributed to Nigeria’s publishing industry as an editor and consultant for firms such as Spectrum Books, Evans Brothers, Bookcraft Nigeria, and Feathers & Ink.

A committed advocate for digital rights and online freedom of expression, Dr. Egbunike has been active in this space since 2011, working at the intersection of scholarship, activism, and journalism. He also served as the 10th Director of Irawo University Centre, Ibadan, where he supported the development of students in character and learning, in alignment with the mission of the University of Ibadan.

Dr. Egbunike is the author of five books, including Dyed Thoughts: A Conversation In and From My Country (2012), Blazing Moon (2015), Hashtags: Social Media, Politics and Ethnicity in Nigeria (2018), Nka (2021), and Digital Youth and Social Movements: Perspectives from Nigeria (2024), published by Pan-Atlantic University Press.
