Nollywood Studies Centre

Dedicated to the study and documentation of Nigeria’s vibrant film industry, the Nollywood Studies Centre explores the cultural, economic, and artistic impact of Nollywood. Through research, archiving, and industry engagement, the centre supports filmmakers, scholars, and enthusiasts in understanding and shaping the future of African cinema.

The Nollywood Studies Centre (NSC) is a resource and research centre dedicated to the Nigerian film industry. The NSC is a unit of the School of Media and Communication of the Pan-Atlantic University and is located on the main campus of the University. The Centre aims to contribute to the development of the industry and its practitioners through its various activities.

The NSC was established in 2011 in recognition of the important status that the Nigerian film industry has attained in terms of its cultural and economic impact. Nigerian films have contributed to a positive representation of both Nigeria and Africa and are currently the most powerful purveyor of the image of Nigeria and Africa to domestic and foreign populations. The goal of the NSC to ensure that this image remains linked to the place of its origins.

The NSC thus aims to be the most important custodian of resources regarding the Nigerian film industry. An ongoing project of the NSC is the establishment of an archive of Nigerian films. The film archive is intended to preserve the films, many of which are being lost, and to provide a resource for research. The film archive currently has a holding of close to ten thousand films

The NSC is the culmination of various initiatives which the School of Media and Communication (SMC) has taken with regard to the Nigerian film industry. The SMC has over the years convened various conferences and workshops to discuss issues relevant to the industry. The Nollywood Studies Centre continues to organise activities such as discussion forums, workshop series and other programmes related to Nollywood for researchers, the general public, and practitioners. One of such activities is the Filmmakers’ Forum, a platform that facilitates interaction between the industry practitioners and the public. The forum creates room for the exchange of ideas and sharing of information within the film industry.

The Nollywood Studies Centre has in the past partnered with the Federal Ministry of Finance on Project Act to train filmmakers in Lagos and Abuja. The Centre has also partnered with organisations like FCMB, GTBank, Microsoft, Coca-Cola and Bank of Industry, to organise events for the industry. The Centre has a long-standing relationship with the NFVCB and has over the years built links to relevant practitioners in the industry.
