To celebrate International Women’s Day, the Centre for Media and Communication Research (CMCR) at the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University held a symposium titled ‘Symposium on Media and Women’s Empowerment in Africa’ on March 6, 2025.
The symposium, which brought together media practitioners, students, advocates, scholars, and more was a full day discussion with key note addresses that left thought provoking experience. Moderated by Judith Anyawike and Amarachukwu Kenneth, the event created a space for women’s voices, participation, and perception.
The keynote speaker emphasized the need to transcend beyond reporting gender issues to actively influencing public changes. Seasoned experts also shared experiences on how media drive women’s empowerment. Ranging from cinema, storytelling, newsroom, and media houses, gender narratives were examined as a framing narrative that leads to representation.
The symposium featured paper presentations from graduate students, researchers, and break-out sessions. Specific issues such as activism and feminism offered data-driven insights into topics surrounding women. Attendees were particularly moved by testimonials which highlighted the voice of marginalized women across social networks. Their experiences encouraged not only academic rigor but real-world applications.
This symposium organized by CMCR demonstrated the future of the media if intentionality and inclusivity is embraced. When media creators, consumers, and educators take responsibility for how narratives are created, the transformative power of women is wielded and sharpened.
